Walking through the city the other day i came upon three computers in the trash by the curb.. two were the typical white office workstations, nothing on the front, not much to them, but the third was a Dell optiplex, one of the small format ones, kinda low, could go sideways, and i picked it up, nah, put it back down, and went to the bar.

walking from the bar i was going past the trash again, and well, couldnt help myself, i snatched up the dell, brought it home, and went to bed. The following afternoon, after work, i broke it up, and looked inside. It of course was missing the harddrive, that was to be expected, what kind of fool leaves a harddrive in a computer after throwing it away, not many anymore. So i again went to town with the contact cleaner and shopvac, got it looking all sparkly inside, and put it in front of a fan, and went to bed.

A couple days later it was the wekend again, so i went to the flea mart, and hit up the junk guy for a power supply. i didnt need the power supply, the PS in the tower worked fine, what i wanted was the end, when they removed the harddrive they just snipped the cord instead of pulling it out.

So i got some bugs out of my work van, my meter, checked polarity and power, snapped the bugs on to the power lines, and ta-da, i had a working end again.

So i went into my box of shit, and pulled out a harddrive i knew was on its way out, and had already yanked everything off of, like a year ago,, and i slapped it in, to give it a shot. Zipppp powered up. Nice.

So i went to bestBuy bought a 320 gb 7200 harddrive, and i priced out memory. this board in the dell can take up to 4gb of ram, nice, thats better than what i was already running. But i didnt buy the memory yet, i dont have 64 bit OS, so i couldnt run beyond two gigs anyway. It had 512 in it as trash picked.

Brought it home, downloaded the BIOS and all the drivers off the internet, put on an OS, and zoooom it works.

YAY.

so i have a machine pretty much ready to kick ass as a DAW. Oh, i forgot what i did today, i put in my pci-324 card for my MOTU and i put in a firewire card form another computer at home. That fucker hasnt worked yet thoough, The computer initially sees the 1394 card, but thats it, cant get to the WD drive i got on the other end of it.

im sure ill get it eventually, but im still kinda sick, my alergies are acting up hardcore, and i feel like garbage, so i took a nap., IM up now, but just cuz i had a phone call with raverjim. Anyway, im going back to bed.

well, im probably gonna browse over to tiger direct, but then straight to bed, i swear :-)

the project

Recently i stumbled upon an old, very old tape, labeled “stillbourne” in a drawer, in my old room at my grandparents house. I thought i knew exactly what it was, once i found it, and i was right.

This was a tape i recorded in about 1995, or 1996. I used a couple reel to reel machines, a very large Roland keyboard, a regular tape machine, and i believe a pair of headphones for a microphone.

It was mostly tape loops, but some of it was very early sequencing work i did, and it was really great to listen to. It did start off rather bland, but by half way through there was this noisey segment probably around a half hour long that just struck me in a way my music hasn’t in a long time.

When i had so very little equipment, i took very large risks, and experimented, and really went all out for the music. Compared to now, where i have a seemingly endless supply of kick drum samples, let along racks of gear.

So from a discussion i had with mike912, i developed the hint of an idea. Old school project, working with old material, circa the mid to late 90’s. Which is really when much of the industrial i like came out, anyway.

So with this as my foundation, i will move outward from here. I have gathered so far for this project.

Alesis ADAT xt24
Panasonic DAT SV-3900
E-MU XL7 Command Station
Roland TD-7 Drum set
Alesis D4 Drum brain
Boss SE-50 Vocal Processor

NO keyboards you say? well, i have the MS200r, and the Polar Virus, buyt yeah, i gotta pick up something old. I have an SK-1 i could circuit bend, but though the basis of the SK1 is “old” circuit bending has too much a modern taste for this project.

I guess ill use the ASR-10, and i think sascha has an old Yamaha keyboard.

for the record. I am an overly sensitive, narcissistic, yet self hating, paranoid, arrrr-teeest.

to quote an ex piece of ass

“you’re a wonderful, loving, man, eddie, with a big big heart, you just have a mean streak going right up the middle of it”

i dunno, whats wrong with a mean streak in the middle, stay in yer lane, yer not supposed to cross over the middle anyway, right?

pick a lane fuckers! coming… or going?
